MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: GREG

Q: What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?

A: I had been working with a personal trainer and she felt that I had outgrown my old gym and encouraged me to try CrossFit. Debra told me about a new CrossFit gym right across the hill from her house so I thought it was a perfect opportunity to try it out.

Q: What was your first impression? How has that changed?

A: I went to the grand opening to do the workout and didn’t know a soul. It was a partner workout and even though I didn’t know anyone, I left there that day with new friends. I was intimidated at first not knowing what I was getting into but I learned very quickly that everyone at this gym is very encouraging and wants to see you be your best self.

Q: What was your first “bright spot”?

A: Completing the rowing marathon with Devan and Heather was an incredible accomplishment and one that I’m very proud of. Also being able to burn 30 calories in 44 seconds on the rower is right up there.

Q: What’s your favorite CrossFit CTRL memory?”

A: Probably being able to climb the rope for the first time in my life. It was something that I never thought I would be able to do.

Q: What do you love most about CrossFit CTRL? What keeps you coming back each month?

A: The first thing is the owner. Devan is just an outstanding person who has drive, ambition, and knows what he is doing. He is always there to help you in any aspect of the workout or take the time to talk to you and explain any questions you may have. Secondly it’s the whole membership! These are all great people and they make you feel like your success is their success. I wouldn’t trade my gym family for the world!

Q: Who Inspires you?

A: My granddaughters because I want to be as healthy as I can be and spend as much time with them that I have left. Also Debra Clay. I don’t know how she does what she does on many days. She works double shifts all the time and still pushes herself to go to the gym. I find it hard to complain about my aches and pains when I see her push herself to exhaustion.

Q: What is your current occupation? What are some hobbies, clubs, groups, or activities you participate in?

A: I’m the Executive Director of The Arc of Harrison County. We take care of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Ive also volunteered for several years on the United Way of Harrison County’s Board of Directors and have been appointed to two committees by two different Governors. In my spare time I love to garden, walk, throw darts, and am always down for live music. I also love spending time with family and friends.

Q: What would you say to someone you love to encourage them to try CrossFit CTRL?

A: Someone else started exactly where you are at currently, the only difference is they started earlier than you did. Don’t let stereotypes of stuck up gym rats discourage you because you won’t find them at our gym. Also don’t be afraid of pushing yourself and failing. Without failure there is no success. One of my favorite quotes is this: You don’t have to be great to start but you have to start in order to be great! I can promise anyone that you won’t find a better gym than this one!
